Winter Experience in Boston

I landed in Boston on 25th December 2014. Before this I had never experienced a winter season where temperature drops below 0 degree nor had I ever experienced snow. I was informed that winters in Boston could be harsh at times. This was the first time I was going to experience such a horrid winter. I was pretty excited like a small kid. The initial few days were really awesome as it was not snowing at all and the temperatures were abnormal for this time of the year in the range of 5-6 degrees.

I was eagerly awaiting for the snow because this was the first time I was ever going to experience it. As the days went by, the temperatures started getting colder. On New Year’s Eve, my husband and I went to explore downtown Boston. However I was freezing my pants off and could not stand outside for more than a few minutes, so we ended up coming home early to the warm heaters. (Also we were jetlagged but that is a different story.)

By 20th January, Boston experienced its first blizzard of that year. I was jumping like a kid, taking pictures of the snow covered roads, describing the event to my sisters as this was a fun and exciting experience for me. The snow abated after almost 24 hours making the whole city look sheepishly white. It was an atrocious storm, unusual for the Bostonians too. The Government had to declare a state of Emergency as there was no public transportation. People were sealed up at home unable to move out. All I could see through my window were big piles of snow mounds, snow covered roads and snow buried cars in our neighborhood.
The ramification of that blizzard was dreadful. Walking along the road was impossible and we were confined to our house.

After a few days, as people were slowly getting back up after the first snowfall, New England was bombarded again with yet another blizzard. The little kid in me was now dejected. As if the two blizzards were not enough, Boston got hit again and again with couple more snow storms accumulating a total of 100 inches of snow for the year 2015. There was chaos in the city with no place to park the car, no place to walk, no public transportation to get around thanks to the heaps of snow all over the place. By mid-February, I was totally frustrated and waiting for the snow to get over.

Luckily since the last week the temperatures are rising again and we get to see the sun occasionally peering through the clouds and I am happy that I survived the winter. I am eagerly waiting for the next season now – Spring.
